Hot Toddies and Cold Weather Cocktails to Keep You Warm and Toasty

By Corrinne Humphrey

When temperatures plunge, get warm from the inside out. Cold weather cocktails usually conjure up images of Irish coffees and traditional mulled wines, but for something different, check out Park City’s bartenders as they riff on Hot Buttered Rum and other traditional toddies.

For the classic Irish coffee, go no farther than Flanagan’s. A blend of Peet’s coffee, honey, Jameson’s Irish Whiskey, hot water, lemon and cloves, it’s the perfect remedy for frigid nights. This authentic Irish pub offers other Irish cure-alls like the “Caramel Macchiato Martini,” made with Smirnoff’s Caramel Kiss Vodka, coffee liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and a splash of coffee, topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar.

For homemade mulled wine served in a specialty mug, garnished with cinnamon sticks and orange slices, head over to Montage Deer Valley’s Vista Lounge. Bartenders whip up Vista Cocoas and Mocha Rum Toddies, made with Gosling’s dark rum, crème de cocoa, fresh LaMill coffee and whipped cream.

The bar at Butcher’s Chop House serves several hot specialty beverages. Bartenders there will warm you up with, say, a “Fireball Cider” made with Fireball Whiskey, hot apple cider and whipped cream, or the aptly- named “Quit’n Time” toddy, with Bailey’s Caramel Irish Cream, Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, hot cocoa and whipped cream.

Handle puts new twists on classic cocktails. Try its version of Hot Buttered Rhum — a tasty concoction of Rhum Agricole, brown butter syrup, Cointreau, St. Germain, bitters, and Yerba Mate tea, stirred and served in a coffee glass. Or try the “Penicillin,” made with blended Scotch, honey ginger syrup, lemon juice, Islay Scotch, Luxardo and Canton Ginger Liqueur.

182c182bJosh Hockman, bartender at Deer Valley’s Brass Tag, won the Park City Restaurant Association’s 2015 Park City Summer Cocktail contest with “The Evangeline.” Visit the Brass Tag this winter for a taste of Hockman’s talents like “The Sultan,” made with High West Distillery’s Campfire Whiskey and local Clifford Farms Honey. A splash of Brass Tag’s house-made orange bitters adds a unique flavor to the classic hot toddy recipe.

This season, laugh at the cold! Don your cashmere and foul weather gear and head down to one of these great watering holes for a winter warm-up from the inside out!
