Park City is a giant playground

By Dee Macaluso

Grown-ups know that Park City is a giant playground, but we can’t leave kids out of the mix. If little ones aren’t quite ready for extreme sports, there are lots of things around town for them to enjoy; and when the kids are happy, everybody’s happy.

The newly renovated Municipal Athletic and Recreation Center (MARC) at 1200 Little Kate Road has sports leagues, classes and camps offering a variety of activities. Drop-in participation and daycare are available with a large play area, climbing wall and nap space. Kids will love the outdoor pool with slides, sprinklers and a lazy river.

Local facilities like the Park City Ice Arena, the City Skate Park, and the Trailside Bike Park are family-friendly places that all experience levels can enjoy. Miner’s Park or any neighborhood playground also makes for an easy outing.

Miles of local hiking and bike trails like the Rail Trail and the Red Pine Loop are easy enough for youngsters. Check with our friendly local sports outfitters for maps and equipment rentals.

Snyderville Basin Recreation offers summer camps as well as team and other sports at their Fieldhouse in Kimball Junction. They have play times for tots and an outdoor splash pad with spray fountains and puddles to stomp in.

The area ski resorts are great places for kid-centered fun. All three have chair lift rides up the mountain that make an easier hike or bike down for little legs. Deer Valley and Canyons both have summer camp programs with lots of creative activities and action-packed adventure. Park City Mountain Resort has the ever popular play park that includes the alpine slide, mountain coaster, zip line, kiddie rides, rock climbing and more.

If you’re looking for daily or drop- in childcare there are several safe, happy places in Kimball Junction to leave children in a loving environment. Monkey Mountain on Ute Blvd. offers childcare, camps and classes with a giant supervised Playland. Kid’s Clubhouse in Newpark provides games, snacks, crafts and kids’ classes with certified staff. Black Diamond Gymnastics has gymnastics, crafts, games and more in a 15,000 square foot indoor playground. They have Kids’ Night Out, Mom Morning Out, after school Kids Klub, camps and open gym times for non-students.

Nearby reservoirs are great places to cool off in crystal blue water. Jordanelle Marina has boat, jet-ski and other water toy rentals to add some thrills to a day at the lake. High Country Rafting in nearby Provo Canyon provides shuttles and rafts or inner tubes for a fun, scenic float down the Provo River.

Truthfully, everything that’s fun for kids is fun for adults as well. Go ahead! Splash, run, climb and ride; rediscover a bit of the child inside you.
